Richmond, BC - Sport BC’s Power of Sport Tour wrapped up a brief stop in Mount Currie on Saturday, November 14, 2009, after two days of sport development clinics aimed at increasing sport participation and infrastructure within the Lil’wat First Nations community.
The clinics, made possible with support from KidSport and funding from Health Canada and 2010 Legacies Now, focused on building sport skills for youth, and training and certifying local coaches. Experts from Basketball BC delivered the clinics to 60 athletes and 12 coaches from the Lil’wat Nation and will return in the coming year to hold follow-up clinics in an effort to develop the infrastructure for continued sport participation in the community.
“Initiatives like the First Nations sport development clinics in Mount Currie are crucial in bringing the positive benefits of sport to communities that may not otherwise have the capacity,” said Paul Varian, President and CEO of Sport BC. “As a driver for sport participation in BC, Sport BC continues to create new and accessible opportunities for sport across the province that lay the foundation for a life of healthy living.”
“Basketball BC is pleased and excited to participate in the First Nations sport development initiatives with Sport BC and KidSport.” added Lawrie Johns, Interim Executive Director of Basketball BC. “Over the past year and a half, we have been able to offer clinics to over 275 athletes and coaches and it is on-going efforts like this that are fundamental to the provision of safe, fun and active programs for our youth.”
This clinic, held at the Xit’olacw Community School, follows the success of other Sport BC First Nations sport development clinics in Hazelton and Alert Bay earlier this year.
