Richmond, BC - Sport BC’s Power of Sport Tour is on the move again, bringing new sport development programming to communities across the province. With the support of KidSport™, and funding from Health Canada and 2010 Legacies Now, Sport BC will deliver the latest in a series of First Nations sport development clinics to the Mount Currie community November 13-14, 2009.

Basketball BC will be on hand to lend expertise to the clinic, which will provide skill development opportunities and coach’s training to people in Mount Currie. As one of the Four Host First Nations, the Lil’wat Nation continues to celebrate and encourage sport participation in the lead up to the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and Sport BC aims to aid in that drive for participation by setting up the infrastructure for a lasting legacy of sport in the Mount Currie community.

“Access to proper infrastructure and cost are two major barriers to sport participation many children in First Nations communities face” said Paul Varian, President and CEO of Sport BC. “Sport BC is committed to working with groups like the Mount Currie Band to bring the positive benefits of sport to communities across the province and create opportunities for all kids to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle for many years to come.”

“The Sport BC Power of Sport Tour is a great opportunity for our youth to build skills in basketball and help them attain a better quality of life,” added Daniel Cindric, Recreation Director for the Lil’wat Nation. “The program helps our youth and parents begin to take the necessary steps that will assist them on their life long journey of healthy living.”

Opportunities like these clinics allow kids to develop more than just sport skills. A positive self-image, a sense of accountability, and a comprehension of shared visions and objectives all come from participation in sport and are crucial to the health of any community.

This clinic, held at the Xit’olacw Community School, continues the success of the inaugural First Nations sport development clinic in September, when members of the Trinity Western University Varsity men’s basketball team led workshops for First Nations youth in Alert Bay.
