Richmond, BC – Sport BC’s Power of Sport Tour® wrapped up Sunday, October 25, 2009 in Terrace, BC after nine intensive days of clinics, lessons, workshops, and events aimed at increasing sport participation and infrastructure within the community.

Experts from nine sport organizations from across the province delivered fifteen community and school programs, including the RunJumpThrow skill development program, hosted in a few Terrace schools by BC Athletics, and Olympic Gold Medalist and ActNow BC Ambassador, Robert Esmie.

“With momentum building for the 2010 BC Games in Terrace next year, people of all ages are keen to become active in organized sport in the Terrace community,” commented Paul Varian, President and CEO of Sport BC. “Through community and school programs and workshops, the Power of Sport Tour® gave over 2,200 community members the opportunity to do just that.”

The most popular events during the Power of Sport Tour are the school programs, targeted to elementary and secondary school aged children. Throughout the Coast Mountain School District, 88 introductory lessons were taught to more than 2,000 students at eight participating schools. Students participated in hands-on activities led by sport organizations such as Action! Schools BC, BC Amateur Athletics Association, BC Disc Sports Society, BC Golf Association, Gymnastics BC, BC Lacrosse Association, Orienteering Association of BC, BC Ringette Association, and SportFit. At the same time, educators were provided with instruction on how to easily incorporate these sports into their existing curricula to create a sustainable legacy of sport in participating schools. Curl BC and CanoeKayak BC also participated in the tour by facilitating programming for the community-at-large.
